Ag Ahead of Other Merchandise

The OECD reported that Q2 2022 global merchandise trade “slowed markedly” with exports and imports up 2.1 percent and 2.6 percent, respectiveyl. That is roughly half their levels in Q1 2022. World trade in services also slowed with exports at 1.1 percent growth and imports at 2.2 percent. By contrast, in value terms U.S. agricultural exports were up 13.9 percent during October-June and U.S. agricultural imports were up 19.8 percent. Understandably, U.S. agriculture derived energy product exports biodiesel and ethanol were up the sharpest levels. Meanwhile, U.S. imports of wheat from Canada was up 60 percent from $247 million to $396 million. ...

Illuminating the value of technical research

On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
