Beef Feed Efficiency The U.S. cattle herd is at its smallest in more than 60 years and at a point where rebuilding is paramount for the future. In the near term, it is a safe assumption that feed prices will remain high, placing a premium on feed efficiency. Since 2008 there has been much research into genetic markers that can predict feed efficiency, but so few of the factors (in the big picture) are truly genetic issues. Most are environmental, which is an advantage that beef holds over pork and poultry in the sense that there are more variables to work with in order to gain efficiencies.
