Russian Grain Markets: 12–16 June 2023 According to the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, as of 5 June, total acreage of spring grains and legumes planted reached 29 Mha including: wheat – 13.5 Mha, barley – 7 Mha, corn – 2.5 Mha, and rice – 159,400 ha. Spring planting of all crops is 92 percent complete covering 50.7 Mha. This spring planting pace is a bit faster than a year ago. However, Siberia is suffering a drought which requires replanting. Many hectares of winter crops and flax are reportedly dead in western Siberia. Some of them will be replanted. The Ministry is estimating a 20 percent drop in winter crop yields. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
