The drought in Australia during 2015 and the end of dairy production quotas in the EU are both having an impact on the global beef market. CETA to Squeeze EU Beef Market The EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which becomes effective 21 September, will squeeze U.S. and other beef exporters’ market share. The agreement guarantees that Canada will have market access for 3,200 MT of its high quality, grain-fed beef. That access will come from the high quality beef (HQB) allotment, originally established between the EU and the U.S. in 2009. The zero rate tariff-rate quota was set at 48,200 MT.
