Thursday trading was low and slow in the corn and soybean markets while wheat was higher on the back of continued dryness for the Plains. The Export Sales report did little to support the grains markets and should have been bearish wheat, had traders been paying attention to demand rather than weather. Overall, there is little news to excite the market until the May WASDE. The cattle markets took a beating today with triple digit losses developing early. Price pressure also occurred in the hog markets were prices reversed direction and gave back most of yesterday’s gains. Communicating importance of value-added products
Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
