TTIP Coherence on Unsafe Food: Taking full advantage of the horsemeat scandal, the European Commission today proposed the harmonization of the Continent's regulations on food products, including mandating sufficiently punitive measures in the case of food fraud, the imposition of mandatory surveillance efforts and certain mutual recognition efforts. As usual, small suppliers immediately sought exemption from the tougher measures, and that was granted. Thus, in the U.S. and Europe the food that is least likely to be safe can be purchased from the small and local suppliers who are exempt from regulatory measures.
