The International Grains Council’s Supply & Demand estimates indicate that global carryover of wheat and coarse grains will decline for a seventh year in a row. That seems like a startling fact. If the trend were to continue indefinitely, the world would run short of food. However, the overall stocks to use ratio remains a relatively comfortable 25 percent. Global production continues to expand and although food is not always situated where it is needed, there is ample surplus supply. On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development.
