Just as the cattle industry is recovering from the recent winter storms in the Southern Plains and cold weather in the Northern Plains, R-CALF is calling for another COOL front in the form of a new proposal for country-of-origin-labeling (COOL). According to R-CALF, the volume of imported beef, cattle, beef variety meat, and processed beef hit an all-time high of almost 2 MMT in 2020 equivalent of beef. As the chart below shows, beef imports started out on normal seasonal patterns similar to 2019, but after the drop in production in April and May due to COVID, imports of beef increased starting in June and peaking in July, dropping back down to normal by October.
