Domestic Tariff War Tariffs are applied to imported goods but in the U.S. the debate over their application to China has become a domestic fight. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told a House Ways & Means Committee this week that the Section 301 tariffs imposed on China by the Trump Administration “weren’t designed to serve our strategic interests” and her department is considering how to “reconfigure” them. It is unclear why it took Secretary Yellen a year and a half on a job overseeing 100,000 employees to reach that conclusion.
