El Nino’s Influence and 2015/16 Grain Prices

The current El Nino will affect more than just U.S. grain and oilseed production, and those other developments can influence world market perspectives, which can suddenly impact global prices. Warmer temperatures next week should create favorable growing conditions across the Corn Belt of the United States. Due to present soil moisture, corn and soybean crop condition ratings seem likely to maintain high levels right into the first of July. At that point, it would take a sudden blocking ridge to propel grain contracts into a weather-related rally. Such a development is presently not a threat, but it is not impossible. That event did occur in the midsummer of 1983, an El Nino year, and prospective yields did decline. However, the most sub...

From WPI Consulting

Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
