Everything is Sweet

How Sweet it Isn't One the same day the news media is highlighting NPD Group data showing that Americans are eating more healthy foods, Gallup is reporting that adult obesity thus far in 2013 is on a path to being the worst in five years. The source of this contradiction? Fruit. The NPD data shows that fruit has jumped from being the fifth most popular food to being number two. Fruit has been promoted for its fiber content, vitamins and minerals. Left out of the messaging is its sugar content. Vegetables are also high in fiber, vitamins and minerals and yet the NPD data shows no increase in consumption for this low-sugar alternative.
