The Senate today invoked cloture on the farm bill, meaning that debate is now limited to 30 hours. That limit should pare the number of amendments offered between now and the debate. Thus far, more than 200 have been filed. The amendment proposed by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) that would deal with rural internet connections is the only one that is guaranteed a vote. Given the margin of the cloture vote, passage of the farm bill is expected early next week, perhaps as early as Monday, 10 June but definitely by 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 11 June, when the time expires.
