Free with a Twist A group of U.S. Congressional Democrats are proposing universal free meals to all school children. The massive expansion in federal food aid would make permanently free breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack to all pupils, regardless of family income. The merits of universal free food aside, the legislators have added a provision that would give schools an extra 30 cents per meal if at least 25 percent of the food is from local sources. The rational for the latter provision is unclear. Nor is it known how 30 cents and 25 percent were developed. It is not even clear what is local? Communicating importance of value-added products
Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
