Greens Whiff Farmers in Europe are upset with their policymakers. The French farmers union has just announced it backs the protests being made by German farm groups. Taking a page out of the Biden White House playbook, German Greens are blaming supermarkets for the troubles being faced by farmers. But the shifts rightward by various EU governments, the latest being President Macron in France, shows the lack of confidence that such a simple strategy will work. The latest red flag is being waived by Svein Tore Holsether, CEO of the Norwegian chemical company Yara. He notes that previous energy imports from Russia have been replaced by increased value-added products like fertilizer. The EU’s imports of nitrogen are up 34 percent, with a...

From WPI Consulting

Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
