Sugarcane and Sugar Pricing Deficient monsoon rains have negatively affected sugarcane crop yields, according to an Indian Ministry of Agriculture report. Sugarcane yields on average fell from 70.317 MT/hectare to 65.753 MT/hectare, a drop of 6.9 percent. Farmers in almost all sugarcane growing areas have been protesting for an increased support price for the crop because input prices -- particularly for diesel (used to run pumps for deep wells) and fertilizers -- have increased. As per reports from the Sugar Research Institute, the cost of production has increased from $34.40/MT in 2011/12 to $41.95/MT in 2012/13.
