Part of the reason for this is legacy from a period when the food supply was less certain and so governments subsidized the crops from which citizens received the most calories. While crops like potatoes play an important role, a very high percentage of food energy consumed comes from rice, corn, and wheat. WPI’s team conducted a formal review of this decision and concluded that the current level of market saturation would limit the benefits of the investment. Based on WPI’s analysis and recommended actions, the board subsequently reversed its decision and undertook a strategic planning effort to identify more impactful investments.
