Livestock Round Up: Dairy Market Still Searching for Balance

The final 2019 dairy utilization data from USDA released this week shows that per capita conumption of milk is at an historic high of 650 pounds. Annual dairy consumption increased by 12.4 percent from 2017 to 2109, while fluid milk, the highest priced use of milk dropped. The annual increase was driven by cheese and butter, and the longer term upward trend by cheese, butter and yogurt.  More interestingly, while loss of restaurant sales have impacted cheese, fluid milk retail sales rebounded in Q2 2020 because fewer people were going to work and thus consuming more milk at home for, it would appear, breakfast cereal. Cereal sales were up early into the pandemic and that drives milk use. In 2005/06 USDA estimated that 25 percent...

From WPI Consulting

Illuminating the value of technical research

On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
