Farm Bill Animal Welfare Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California) introduced legislation that reflects the new animal welfare standards negotiated between the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the United Egg Producers (UEP). The measure would essentially require producers to double the space given to layers, add "enrichments" to cages -- including perches, nesting boxes, and scratching areas, regulate ammonia levels in hen houses, and provide for production claims on labels, such as "eggs from caged hens," "eggs from hens in enriched cages," "eggs from cage-free hens" and "eggs from free-range hens."
