Corn After last week’s rains across Argentina, the corn crop’s moisture level was too high for harvest, slowing the weekly progress rate to just 1.1 percent. So far, only 7 percent of Argentina’s corn crop is harvested, and yields are highly variable and below last year’s levels. The rains served only to delay the harvest of the early-planted corn but boosted soil moisture and development potential for the late-planted crop. WPI expects strong yields for the late-planted crop, and we look for total production of 45-46.1 MMT. Last week there was a slight increase in the arrival of trucks to ports, but the flow of grain to export ports remains low. The vessel lineup is slowly increasing, presently totaling 2.4...
Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
