Because the paper market has no load rate guarantee, the spread between cargo and paper is a calculation of the waiting time at Paranagua and the demurrage costs of loading a Panamax at ports. The spread used to be at 25 cents over paper for a Panamax loading in Paranagua; however, with the 60-day waiting time at the port, the spread increased to 35-40 cents over paper. Northern ports like Santos and Tubarao have a premium over Paranagua for better quality and a shorter waiting time. Those premiums typically are around 30 cents.
