This mainly is due to the discovery of GMO rice that had entered the country illegally. The inspection rule had required that 20 percent of a shipment needs to be sampled for analysis, but the new directive requires 100 percent of all products that are possibly GMO to be sampled, including corn and soybeans and products derived from these items. Importers in Turkey have reported that cargoes will not be discharged until the GMO approvals have been received. Previously, cargo could be discharged to bonded facilities awaiting approval.
