News Updates MEDITERRANEAN AND MIDDLE EAST COMMENTS This week there were quite a few comments in the press and from various organizations on the grain situation in Syria. FAO is reviewing the 40 percent decline in Syrian wheat production, which is a reduction both from its 2011 high and 50 percent lower than historical levels. Syria will require about 1.5 MMT of wheat imports in 2013, 300,000 MT of barley and just over 1.4 MMT of corn. FAO actually shows an increase in local barley production for 2013, which at a total of almost 1 MMT, will be higher than the level reached in recent years. Syria's corn importation level is to be expected, as the country does not grow corn and must meet feed demands of close to 2 MMT.FAO states that it wil...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
