Middle East, Mediterranean, and Africa Regional Analysis

Mediterranean/Middle East/North Africa/Africa – MEA Region Turkish officials announced that the cost of vessels passing through the Bosphorus/Dardanelles will increase by 15 percent on 1 July. The new tariff is set at $5.83 per MT and will affect all grain/oilseed items from the Black Sea.   Turkey has become the largest importer of Ukraine corn in 2024/25, importing 2.6 MMT from September 2024 to April 2025 according to Turkish statistical information. Ukraine information has the corn imports much higher at 4.5 MMT for the same period. The difference in import quantities may be due to some of the “imports” only passing through Turkey to other countries, like Iraq. The local USDA-FAS office expects that Turkey wi...

Communicating importance of value-added products

Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
