Regional Updates MIDDLE EAST/MEDITERRANEAN COMMENTS As part of its budget control measures, Egypt has announced price increases of 35-40 percent for gasoline (depending on the grade) and 60 percent for home cooking gas. This announcement was made during the Eid Al-Fitr holidays to avoid any organized protests, and it follows other recent price increases for water (45 percent), electricity (26 percent) and Cairo subway fares (250 percent). The gasoline price hike will be very difficult for the farming sector as well as grain transportation. Diesel fuel prices were not raised, however, which should mean that most major trucking will not be affected (at least not yet).
