Regional Updates MEDITERRANEAN/MIDDLE EAST/NORTH AFRICA Morocco is forecast by USDA-FAS to be importing about 4.5 MMT of wheat in 2021/22 – down from 5.4 MMT in 2020/21. The drop is due to the greatly increased wheat production, up from last year’s drought affected production of 2.6 MMT to this year’s forecasted 7.5 MMT. Due to the much better production levels, the ending stocks number for wheat is expected to more than double to 2.4 MMT. Barley too will show a much better production level, jumping from 640,000 MT to 2.8 MMT while imports drop by 200,000 MT to 300,000 MT. The barley use in animal feed will increase by 1.1 MMT to 1.7 MMT due to barley availability. Morocco wheat imports will “officially&rdqu...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
