Insurance Angle: Crop insurance is evolving to become a primary support mechanism of U.S. farm policy, now apparently including protection against incidental losses. Its appeal prompted catfish farmers to lobby for mandated crop insurance coverage in the Senate version of the 2012 Farm Bill. Perhaps the largest growing risk to higher value crops, livestock and processors is the adverse effect of a food safety related problem, and there is a push to get USDA to evaluate expanding its insurance program coverage to include this risk.
