We are not sure that the U.S. and indeed the world have ever seen circumstances that match what has been going on in recent weeks. The novel coronavirus that was first detected in Wuhan, China has now quickly spread around the world. There is presently no vaccine to prevent this virus; it will probably take a year to fully develop one. More than 200,000 cases and nearly 8,300 fatalities have been recorded worldwide, and there are certainly many more cases not yet diagnosed or recorded.
