On Tuesday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported May biodiesel production of 149 million gallons, 9 million gallon above April and up 13 million gallons versus May 2017. The January-May 2018 total of 686 million gallons was 120 million gallons higher than the first five months of 2017. The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) mandates 2018 biomass-based diesel usage of at least 2.1 billion gallons. However, the requirements are complicated, and a growing portion of biomass-based diesel is being met with renewable diesel production, which is not reported by the EIA.
