ADM is making a move to acquire GrainCorp, Ltd., the major grain handler in eastern Australia. It was reported last week that ADM had increased its stake from 4.9 percent to 14.9 percent. Today the press was full of news about an attempt to buy the entire company for about $2.77 billion. The first phase of privatization of the Australian grain trade came with the abolition of the AWB's monopoly. That opened the door for a flock of private trading companies to try to gain a foothold in that market.
