Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) is the largest sorghum producing region in the world, growing nearly 44 percent of global output. Yet it exports and imports only a small fraction of globally traded milo. Production in the region has been relatively stable. By contrast, world trade in sorghum has been volatile, peaking in 2014/15 at 12.1 MMT, slumping in 2018/19 to just 3.4 MMT, and now rising back up to 11.4 MMT. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development.
