Southeast Europe Regional Analysis

Regional Updates Russia’s Ag Ministry approved an export quota of 7 MMT for all grains through June 2020. The move is to “help ensure stability” of domestic grain and grain-product markets. The move comes amid coronavirus panic buying in international wheat markets and also after Russian flour millers complained that wheat prices, due to a strong export pace, were high enough to create large, negative milling margins.  In a similar move, Russia has suspended the export of sunseed and soybean exports through the end of June 2020 to help stabilize prices and domestic markets for these products.  Russia has also announced it would start to sell some of its state wheat reserves in response to surging flour prices...

Communicating importance of value-added products

Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
