It was not supposed to be this way. Our collective efforts at social distancing, washing hands, wearing face masks and self-quarantining when necessary were supposed to have kept COVID-19 at bay and allowed a re-opening of the U.S. economy that had fallen into a deep recession. In fact, President Trump was very much counting on this together with a sharp increase in economic activity to support his re-election campaign. But instead, we find ourselves facing a resurgence of the virus especially in the South and Southwest that has seen new infections spike to daily record levels in several states forcing some to shut down again.
