From 2013/14 through 2015/16, the world produced three record wheat crops in a row. 2016/17 production is unlikely to reach the level of 2015/16’s record 733 MMT, but it will be quite large nonetheless.USDA will release its May WASDE on 10 May. This issue is always notable because it contains USDA’s first projections for the forthcoming new crop year based on some of the conditions that will actually affect new crop supplies and demand. Its forecasts such as those made in conjunction with its late February Outlook Forum are derived from statistical trends and other factors months before the first new wheat crops are harvested and spring seeded crops are planted in the Northern Hemisphere. The May WASDE will also contain USDA’s first survey-...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
