With Thanksgiving nearly upon us, it is time to see if the "turkey trend" holds true once again. As WPI's Bob Kohlmeyer once described (WPI 21 November 2006), a seasonal market trend is the strong tendency for soybean futures to close higher on the days before and after Thanksgiving. I made the mistake of asking a veteran trader why soybeans always seemed to act this way. He scowled at me for a second as though I were dumb, and then said, "Because sellers take long holiday weekends and buyers don't." I never asked again. However, the fact is that over the last three decades January soybeans have closed higher on the day before Thanksgiving more than 75 percent of the time.
