One sign of the current state of grain and soy markets is the lack of attention being paid to the next batch of reports from USDA/NASS that are to be released 30 September. The fall harvests are off and running. USDA says that 10 percent of the U.S. corn crop and 7 percent of the soybean crop were harvested as of 20 September, which is reasonably close to average progress for the date. There may be some showers in the western Corn Belt, but the overall weather outlook should allow for good progress this week. Corn yield reports are varied enough to keep up the market speculation over the final size of the U.S. crop. There appears to be less variation in the early soybean yield reports. They are almost all very good and often better than last...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
