U.S. – China Trade Dispute: More Complex Than It May Appear

The ongoing conference in Indonesia organized by the U.S. Soybean Export Council and the U.S. Grains Council has featured major discussions about the outlook for U.S. – China trade dispute. Specifically, attendees (of which this analyst is one) are estimating the trade war’s impact on soybean and soymeal supplies to Southeast Asia. The region is a large importer of soybeans and soymeal from the U.S., as well as Argentina and Brazil, but had its normal sourcing pattern greatly disrupted this year by the drought in Argentina and China’s shift in soybean procurement. Communicating importance of value-added products

Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
