U.S. HRW Production Slipping; HRS Acres Important

The previous early look at potential U.S. 2018 wheat production (see Ag Perspectives, 9 March), using the table below, was before last month’s release of the USDA planting intentions estimates. WPI has no reason today to change its estimate of the potential 2018 hard red winter wheat crop, reduced to 625 million bushels from 750 million bushels in 2017. In fact, there are other estimates now that are similar. We also continue project total U.S. wheat production at 1.650 billion bushels versus USDA’s February Outlook forecast of 1.840 billion bushels. Following are the reasons why: It still hasn’t rained across most of the key hard red winter wheat production region of the southern Plains. This crop has also suffered...

From WPI Consulting

Illuminating the value of technical research

On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
