Bulgaria is headed toward record crops this year with wheat output more than doubling since joining the EU. However, the overall record for countries joining the bloc back in the 1990’s is more of a mixed bag when it comes to wheat. Neither the area harvested, nor yields have changed that much. These predominantly eastern European capitals may explain the lag is due to CAP payments not being harmonized, or that overall wheat production is favored agronomically in the western member states.
