Soybean production in Brazil has been spilling over into Brazilian pasture land, forcing more confinement feeding of Brazilian beef. This corresponds with increased Brazilian beef exports so far this month compared to last year. Beef is up 15 percent in volume and 24 percent in value. Meanwhile, chicken is up 9.8 percent in volume and 3.8 percent in value, and pork is up 42 percent in volume and 28 percent in value. The Brazilian government is targeting dairy export promotion with a $2 million program mainly aimed at the Middle East: Algeria, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Iraq. WPI’s team was retained by the governing board of a U.S. industry organization to review a decision, reached by vote, to invest significant assets into the development and management of an export trading company. WPI’s team conducted a formal review of this decision and concluded that the current level of market saturation would limit the benefits of the investment. Based on WPI’s analysis and recommended actions, the board subsequently reversed its decision and undertook a strategic planning effort to identify more impactful investments.
