Cattle on Feed

USDA released its monthly Cattle on Feed (COF) report this past Friday, and many of the pre-report industry estimates were accurate (see Ag Perspectives, 19 October). The total number of cattle on feed as of 1 October was 10.8 million or 105 percent of last year, the largest October inventory since 2012.

Placements in September totaled 2.15 million head or 113 percent of the same month a year ago, surpassing pre-report estimates and the largest volume for September since 2011. Marketings were 1.78 million head or 103 percent of year-ago levels.

Placements were partially driven by drought conditions in the Plains, but that pace will necessarily slow moving forward. Another key point is that there was one less weekday in September 2017...

Illuminating the value of technical research

On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
