Europe is facing an energy crisis this coming winter and the food situation could be bad as well. This summer’s drought, reduced corn and sunflower oil imports from Ukraine, and the fact that energy prices are tied to food could make for an equally bad situation. This is exacerbated by the fact that caloric consumption increases in winter by around 86 kilocalories/day, depending on activity and the amount of shivering to keep warm. An active life in a cold winter increases caloric needs by about 3.4 percent. Meanwhile, the average age of Europeans has been increasing with a fifth of the population now over 65 years of age. Communicating importance of value-added products
Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
