Grain is Out, Veggies are In

Some members of the U.S. Congress want more support going to fruits and vegetables. They note that the overwhelming majority of farm bill income support and risk management subsidies go to grains and oilseeds. California dominates U.S. production of fruits and vegetables, accounting for 70 percent of the total, with other Western states like Washington, Oregon and Arizona also specializing in these crops. More could be grown in the Midwest. U.S. production of vegetables is declining (see below). Production of non-citrus fruits increased in 2021 but fell again in 2022. Weighing in on strategic realignment

WPI’s team was retained by the governing board of a U.S. industry organization to review a decision, reached by vote, to invest significant assets into the development and management of an export trading company. WPI’s team conducted a formal review of this decision and concluded that the current level of market saturation would limit the benefits of the investment.
