Green Food Crisis Regardless of the war in Ukraine and a global food price shock, the EU is moving forward with its plan to cut by half the use of “risky” pesticides by 2030. The goal is to replace them with “safe and sustainable alternatives.” For some, it looks like adding a food crisis to go along with the current energy crisis in Europe.  The plan expects member states to pick their own targets for reduction, rather than a one size fits all approach. However, current pesticide usage is highly disparate with the Netherlands using four times as much pesticide per hectare as Poland, and Ireland utilizing nearly twice the amount as Austria.
