Move over Singapore, the U.S. has become the second country to allow cell cultured – or “lab grown” –chicken to hit the commercial market. Singapore did so in 2020; the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) this week approved labels for cell cultured chicken products. How did we get here? Back in March 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and FSIS agreed to establish a joint regulatory framework for human foods made from cultured cells of livestock and poultry. Under the agreement, FDA oversees the collection, growth, and the differentiation of living cells into various cell types, such as proteins and fats.
