The December 2021 futures contract on oats is up over 72 percent since the beginning of the year and may yet surge higher. The volume traded in recent days has risen along with open interest, though volume has not repeated the large day it had back on 23 September. The increase is not unprecedented. In 2001, the nearby oat contract rose a comparable amount and for the same reason, adverse weather during the growing season. The increase over the two years 2009 and 2010 was also 73 percent.
