Soybeans Gaining on Corn in Battle for Acres The assumption by most analysts this winter has been that corn would gain a lot of planted area in 2012 while soybeans would lose acres. However, the drought in South America and weak domestic corn demand has caused the market to shift in a direction that is more favorable to soybeans. Yesterday the new crop soybean-corn futures price ratio closed at 2.3 and it may rise even more in the next few days. With many analysts now saying a 2.2 price ratio is neutral for corn and soybean plantings, the recent rise in the ratio is shifting the profitability advantage toward soybeans.
