Drought Implications The drought has brought with it a variety of explanations and proposed solutions. The Great Drought of 2012 A drought is loosely defined as a lengthy period of sub-normal rainfall usually accompanied by above-normal temperatures. By that definition, the United States is in the grips of a searing drought. At this juncture we can say that the severity of 2012 drought is nearing that of other major droughts, and we can predict with confidence that its damage will be very costly. Very Tight Soybean Supplies The 2012 calendar year has seen an unprecedented decline in global soybean production as a result of droughts in South America, the U.S. and potentially one in India. As a result, global demand will have to be ratio...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
World Perspectives, Inc. welcomes Steve Wolf as Director of Commodity Intelligence. Steve brings a broad range of agribusiness, commodity market, and consulting experience to WPI from previous roles at Tyson Foods and Informa Economics (now part of S&P Global). Steve most recently spent thr...
