Animal Disease It’s back! After the hog market was disrupted in 2014/15 by the spread of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv), a new case has been discovered in Alberta on a 400-head farrow-to-finish operation. The discovery was made on 3 January and reported by a private veterinarian. This is Alberta’s first case. In 2017, there were about 50 sites in Manitoba with confirmed cases of PEDv. The disease was a major factor during the previous 2014 outbreak when pig losses drove hog prices to record highs.
