Biodiesel in 2013

As we've noted many times, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has waived the statutory cellulosic biofuel mandate for three straight years, but has not waived the overall advanced biofuel statutory mandate in which the cellulosic mandate is nested. Thus, while the cellulosic mandate has been reduced, the undifferentiated advanced mandate has effectively been increased by a cumulative 828 million gallons over these same three years. Therefore, through the waiver of cellulosic's mandate, the potential demand for biodiesel under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) can vary between the specific biodiesel mandate of more than 1 billion gallons to a level that includes either a portion of or all of the undifferentiated advanced biofuels cat...

Market Commentary: Tweet Yields Another Rally and Perhaps a Floor

After yesterday’s charge forward in soybeans and a lower close in the overnight, optimists on a trade deal with China again took over and brought another higher close that this time infected both the corn and wheat markets. As stated in Matt’s adjacent analysis, this seems overwroug...

Communicating importance of value-added products

Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
