Russian Grain Markets: 22–26 April 2024 Russian analysts are beginning to worry that this season’s grain production in Russia may drop from almost 145 MMT in 2023 to 135 MMT because of the drought in Southern Federal District – the wheat belt of Russia. Russian Ministry of Agriculture forecasts wheat production down to 88 MMT versus 90 MMT, barley production is now 18 MMT versus 19.5 MMT, and corn is 15 MMT versus 18.8 MMT. The 2023 crop produced 93 MMT of wheat, barley – 21.1 MMT, and corn – 16.6 MMT. Earlier, the industry was expecting rains, and the forecast was still around 140 MMT but now the rains are scarce and if the drought continues it may have a severe impact in Russia’s south. All the statis...

From WPI Consulting

Illuminating the value of technical research

On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
